Connecting with Medical Learners

Espanola, ON — The Espanola Regional Hospital and Health Centre recently participated in the 2026 Northern Ontario Community Concierge & Connection Event in Thunder Bay, hosted by NOSM University and regional healthcare partners.

The event brought together medical learners, residents, physicians, and healthcare organizations from across Northern Ontario to explore communities, learn about regional healthcare opportunities, and build connections that may influence future practice decisions.

ERHHC was represented by CEO Martin Lees and Dr. Chantal Powers, who met with learners and residents throughout the day to share information about healthcare in Espanola and the opportunities available within our hospital and surrounding communities. These conversations provided a valuable opportunity to highlight not only the scope of care offered locally, but also the lifestyle, professional supports, and community connections that make rural practice so rewarding.

Recruitment in rural and northern healthcare is built on relationships. Events like this allow communities to engage with future physicians early in their training, increase awareness of local practice opportunities, and ensure communities like Espanola remain part of the conversation as learners consider where they will establish their careers.

By participating in initiatives such as the Community Concierge & Connection Event, ERHHC continues to foster the relationships that support the long-term sustainability of healthcare in Espanola and across the region.
